Corporate giving: philanthropy without the money | Giving Evidence
This article first appeared in The Guardian?s Sustainable Business section.
If you search on Google in the UK for ?suicide?, you?ll see a red telephone at the top of the page alongside the words ?Need help?? and the number for the Samaritans.
This probably cost Google very little to arrange, yet is hugely valuable ? much more so than a donation of the equivalent cash to the confidential emotional support charity.
So should companies hand out cheques or be more creative with their social engagement? Kurt Hoffman, director of the Institute of Philanthropy, offers a clue when he says ?money is the least valuable social change asset?.
While the first iteration of corporate social responsibility was often built around handing out donations to local schools and community groups, most companies recognise today that they can be far more effective by using their key skills and non-financial resources to leverage change.
An illustration of that change is that corporate social responsibility indices used to include measures of the amount of money which a company had given. Mercifully these have virtually disappeared in favour of focusing on what has been achieved. Achievement is typically much greater when companies use their core commercial capabilities rather than just money.
For example, many logistics companies use their skills and capabilities to deliver much-needed aid to populations in the developing world.
TNT managed to get aid to communities affected by the south Asian tsunami within 48 hours, faster than any NGO could have. In Africa, the Coca-Cola Company has used the trucks and network which form its logistical operation to combat the spread of HIV and Aids. It distributed condoms and attractive information material to all those dusty villages in the back of beyond where, astonishingly, you can always get a Coke.
By contrast, Ikea recently gave tens of millions of pounds to a three-year programme for the UN refugee agency, UNHCR, to care for 120,000 refugees in the Horn of Africa. While that work is vital, Ikea?s support would be more effective if it concentrated on leveraging its own resources and knowledge to create change, rather than handing out money.
Achievement is greater still when companies can align doing good with their commercial goals. For example, iodine deficiency disorder is the world?s most prevalent cause of brain damage, affecting over 740 million people, 13% of the world population. Yet it is easily prevented, simply by including iodine in people?s diets. Unilever created a?brand?of iodine-enriched salt for sale in India and has since taken it to Ghana, where it became profitable within 18 months
Swire, a massive Asian conglomerate has a cap-and-trade system for water between its various businesses to incentivise the property development business to design low-water usage into buildings that it will rent out or sell. This insulates it somewhat against political and financial pressure on water guzzlers.
Neither of these examples fits the stereotypical view of corporate giving. But because they?re commercially attractive, they?re easier for companies to defend and sustain ? so achievement increases yet further over time.
When companies are considering how to engage with social and environmental issues, the most important question is what will best help beneficiaries. Any good philanthropic?strategy, like any good commercial strategy, involves finding a unique configuration of assets which allows the biggest impact for the smallest input.
Since companies have unique capabilities ? distribution fleets, huge internet audiences, public trust ? it?s often rather bizarre if their response to a social or environmental problem is to give cash.
Purists will moan. Charities? revenue are declining and companies have the cash to top them up. But the objective isn?t to fund charities: it?s to get a job done, such as reducing water usage or improving brain development. Several of those examples involved charities ? the Google ad for the Samaritans, Unilever working with Unicef in Ghana, for example ? but the partnership is much more intelligent than just writing a cheque.

Bat-Killing Fungus Continues Deadly Spread; Death Toll Now at 7 Million
Things keep getting worse for North American bats. Nearly seven million from various species have now fallen victim to the deadly but little-understood disease known as white-nose syndrome (WNS) since it was first observed in February 2006. The fungus that causes WNS, Geomyces destructans, has quickly spread from cave to cave and state to state, and the disease itself was confirmed for the first time west of the Mississippi River this week. This makes 19 U.S. states and four Canadian provinces where the disease can now be found. WNS has a 70 to 100 percent mortality rate; it has no cure or treatment, nor is it entirely clear how it kills bats.
The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) confirmed April 2 that WNS had been found on three bats in two caves, exactly two years after the fungus was first observed there. ?White-nose syndrome in Missouri is following the deadly pattern it has exhibited elsewhere,? Mollie Matteson, a bat specialist with the Center for Biological Diversity (CBD), said in a prepared statement. ?First the fungus shows up on a few healthy bats. A couple of years later, the disease strikes. And if the pattern continues, we can expect that in another few years, the majority of Missouri?s hibernating bats will be dead.?
The names and locations of the Missouri caves, which are closed to the public, were not disclosed in order to limit the chance of humans accidentally stressing the remaining bats. ?Disturbing bats in caves while they roost or hibernate can increase their stress and further weaken their health,? MDC bat biologist Tony Elliott said in a prepared statement.
WNS has, in just the past few weeks, been confirmed in Delaware, Alabama, Maine?s Acadia National Park, and Great Smoky Mountains National Park in Tennessee and North Carolina. The disease has also spread to new locations in Kentucky, Ohio and Indiana. The fungus appears to be transmitted from bat to bat, or by humans visiting bat caves. The disease has affected at least four endangered species: the Indiana bat (Myotis sodalis), the gray bat (Myotis grisescens), the Virginia big-eared bat (Corynorhinus townsendii virginianus) and the Ozark big-eared bat (Plecotus townsendii ingens).
As the WNS name suggests, the fungus first manifests as white fuzz on the faces of infected hibernating bats, but according to the U.S. Geological Survey?s Fort Collins Science Center, the real damage may come when it spreads to bats? wings: ?Wing membranes represent about 85 percent of a bat?s total surface area and play a critical role in balancing complex physiological processes. Healthy wing membranes are vital to bats, as they help regulate body temperature, blood pressure, water balance and gas exchange?not to mention the ability to fly and to feed.? According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS), bats with WNS behave uncharacteristically, such as flying outdoors during the cold winter months or gathering at cave mouths when they should be hibernating. Such behavior could cause bats to burn off their winter fat reserves, leaving them susceptible to freezing or starvation.
Although WNS and the Geomyces destructans fungus appear to have no effect on humans, their potential impact on human health is troubling. As the bats disappear, growing insect populations could spread disease or devastate agricultural crops. Citing just the most recently afflicted state as an example, Missouri?s 775,000 gray bats eat more than 223 billion bugs each year, according to the CBD. Although the potential effect on U.S. agriculture has not yet been felt, a recent study found that the loss of North American bats could lead to agricultural losses of more than $3.7 billion per year.
Research into WNS is ongoing, and there are a few small rays of hope. Some European bat populations that have come in contact with the G. destructans fungus appear to be resistant to it, and in fact some scientists theorize the fungus may have originated in Europe and recently been carried to the New World by humans. In addition, a few small populations of little brown bats (Myotis lucifugus) in Pennsylvania and Vermont also appear to have remained healthy despite three years of contact with the fungus, for as-yet-unknown reasons.
For more information on WNS, visit the FWS resource page about white-nose syndrome, including their safety guide for cavers, or follow FWS?s White-Nose Syndrome in Bats page on Facebook. The CBD?s Save Our Bats campaign offers several actions people can take to encourage government efforts to help slow the spread of the disease.

| Hello.
How current is this hack? http://www.textfiles.com/hacking/INTERNET/hotmail.txt I am not a hacker. I wonder if this has been used on me during any period when I was not logged out - in the past I sometimes was "stupid," as the author of these instructions puts it -- I would rather call it "trusting that nobody was bothering to waste their time getting into someone with no money and nothing interesting going on in their life's account" - enough to not log out.

| Personally I think this is a prank. Why would he give list a throwaway hotmail account, then claim that he'll hunt you down if you try to hack it, when it's pretty clear he couldn't have access to your IP.
Also if you actually read it, in step 1 you have to login using the account. Which requires the password. This is really just a session hijack, you couldn't use it against a random hotmail account. A key logger would be much simpler and get you the actual password. Jason.

A key logger can be a hardware device you connect between the keyboard and computer, or a software program you install on the computer. Anti-virus and malware detection can detect key loggers. Observant users can also spot a hardware key logger if they look at their cables. It's unlikely that a hardware key logger is installed on a laptop. Googling: detecting key loggers Should find some relevant up to date info. Covertly using a key logger is most likely illegal in your jurisdiction. Jason

Arizona law would censor the Internet

The state of Arizona could find itself in the company of countries like China and Syria for censoring the Internet if the state's governor signs a bill recently passed by the legislature.?
Arizona House Bill 2549, which is now on Gov. Jan Brewer's desk for signature, was created to counter bullying and stalking. The law would make it a crime to use any electronic or digital device to communicate using "obscene, lewd or profane language" or to suggest a lewd or lascivious act, if done with the intent to "terrify, intimidate, threaten, harass, annoy or offend."
First Amendment rights group Media Coalition, which?represents the Motion Picture Association of America, the Recording Industry Association of America, the Association of American Publishers and other related groups, says the bill is not only a violation of the First Amendment, but is so far-ranging as to be preposterous.
In a letter to the governor, the coalition said while government can criminalize speech "that rises to the level of harassment, and many states have laws that do so," Arizona's legislation:
... takes a law meant to address irritating phone calls and applies it to communication on web sites, blogs, listserves and other Internet communication. H.B. 2549 is not limited to a one to one conversation between two specific people. The communication does not need to be repetitive or even unwanted. There is no requirement that the recipient or subject of the speech actually feel offended, annoyed or scared. Nor does the?legislation make clear that the communication must be intended to offend or annoy the reader, the subject or even any specific person.
This bill isn't the first the legislature has tackled when it comes to regulating what's said -- or seen -- electronically. Another, Senate Bill 1219, would let parents see the text messages on the phones of their children, if they're under the age of 18. That legislation remains in committee.
H.B. 2549 "would apply to the Internet as a whole, thus criminalizing all manner of writing, cartoons, and other protected material the state finds offensive or annoying," Media Coalition says on its website -- at least for now, until what it says is found to be offensive or annoying by those in Arizona.
