Forklift Safety for Those Truly Serious about It | Toyota Equipment

my fingers are crossedJust how serious are you about safety? Back when Toyota?s ?System of Active Stability? [SAS] was introduced we thought that it was the killer app for forklifts, one that would make the trucks a sure fire ?hit? with the safety minded. I think it?s helped but I?m uncertain that safety at the end of the day has as much value when measured by the wallet as it does if you only consider corporate rhetoric.

We went through SAS in a previous post while in a recent article in Warehouse News from the UK, there was additional support for this game changing feature. I?ll share the article with you here in hope the safety of employees be given the consideration it should be.

An independent test of forklift trucks from four well-known brands has demonstrated exceptional stability for the Toyota Tonero engine powered forklift, equipped with the Toyota System of Active Stability (SAS). The test was conducted by the independent testing organisation Union Technique de l?Automobile, du Motocycle et du Cycle (UTAC).

Test conditions followed a proposed European standard for dynamic lateral stability. While all four forklifts passed the independent test, only the Toyota Tonero achieved an excellent score on all requirements. Forklift stability is a key safety factor, and these test results demonstrate that Toyota forklifts with SAS are best equipped to help companies drive down driver and damage costs related to tip-over accidents.

The independent testing organization UTAC tested four standard, commonly available forklift trucks including the Toyota Tonero. The test conditions were based on a proposed European norm. The Toyota Tonero passed with flying colors, outperforming the proposed standard ? and the other tested forklift models ? in a test designed to measure dynamic lateral stability.

Dynamic lateral stability refers to the ability of a forklift truck to stay upright and not tip over while in motion. The dynamic stability test ? with two professional test drivers having differing levels of forklift driving experience ? involved making sharp turns at speed to determine whether the forklift would become unstable. Particular attention was paid to whether the forklift?s inner rear wheel left the ground, as this indicates vehicle instability and could lead to the forklift tipping over.

During more than 200 rounds of testing, the Toyota Tonero far exceeded the other forklift trucks being tested. In particular, the Toyota Tonero was the only truck where the inner wheel did not leave the ground with either driver, demonstrating the exceptional dynamic lateral stability provided by Toyota SAS.

Tony Wallis Operations Director for Toyota Material Handling UK stated ?By providing excellent stability, Toyota SAS can help prevent accidents, injuries and damage to goods. Loss of lateral stability leading to vehicle tip-over is a major cause of serious forklift accidents and injuries, and is the single largest cause of forklift accident fatalities. It is a clear indication of our focus and desire to improve workplace safety for operators and drive down damage costs in business, we strongly believe we can support businesses in establishing safe, healthy, productive workplaces, by providing high-quality materials handling products, services and solutions, as this test demonstrates, Toyota SAS helps keep our forklifts stable, protecting drivers, goods and the trucks themselves. SAS addresses costs in two key areas ? driver costs and damages costs, which together can account for more than 70% of the life cycle cost of your forklift. Forklift accidents can have particularly serious consequences for companies.

Toyota SAS can help to reduce the risk of forklift accidents, protecting your employees and your bottom line.?

SAS: six unique features that help protect drivers and goods

As the focus on workplace safety increases across Europe, Toyota SAS stands out as technology that can actively help to reduce the risk of accidents and drive down materials handling costs. Unique to Toyota forklift trucks, SAS constantly monitors forklift operations and automatically takes corrective action when it senses factors that could lead to truck or load instability. There are six advanced SAS functions: the unique swing lock cylinder, mast front tilt angle control, mast rear tilt speed control, the active steering synchroniser and one touch fork leveling control, as well as speed reduction when cornering on Toyota?s 3-wheel counterbalance forklift models. All SAS functions work together and help to keep the truck, driver and goods safely on the move ? and productivity on the up. This way, SAS helps drive down costs for business.

Test results, certified by UTAC

In the forklift industry, current standards do not cover risk exposure related to dynamic lateral overturn (sideways tip-over) accidents. Research conducted jointly by the Institut National de Recherch? et de S?curit? (INRS) in France and the University of Hamburg in Germany has led to a protocol for testing dynamic lateral stability. The test procedure works by creating dynamic lateral overturning movements in machines travelling along a curved trajectory.

This test protocol, which has been submitted to the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) for evaluation and approval, provides a realistic and independent assessment of the safety performance of forklift trucks. By applying this test protocol, the French testing agency UTAC validated the excellent stability afforded by Toyota SAS.
Committed to safety

Toyota Material Handling strongly believes the company can support businesses in establishing safe, healthy, productive working environments, by providing high-quality materials handling products, services and solutions. Apart from this test, the company is setting up other projects to further expand its contribution in these areas.

Union Budget 2013: Expect relief for salary earners, households ...

UPA-II?s last budget may offer some sops to salary earners and households as Finance Minister P Chidambaram will look to balance the compulsions of growth and fiscal prudence with election year politics.

The biggest challenge before Chidambaram, who will be presenting his eighth budget, would be to keep every constituent happy, arrest decelerating economic growth and bring down fiscal deficit to the committed level of 4.8 percent of GDP.

The Budget is also significant as it will be the last before the general elections due in April-May next year. There can only be an interim budget before the elections.

Some sops are likely

Some sops are likely

Among other things, Chidambaram will be under pressure to earmark funds for schemes and programmes to fulfil electoral promises, especially with regard to the Food Security Bill which seeks to provide subsidised foodgrain to poor as a matter of legal right.

The Economic Survey, which precedes the budget, is not in favour of the imposition of tax on super rich, stating that the government should focus on widening the tax base in preference to raising rates. The final call, however, will have to be taken by Chidambaram.

Salary earners may get some relief, with the Minister likely to raise the income tax exemption limit, which is currently at Rs 2 lakh per annum. The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Finance had suggested that the limit be raised to Rs 3 lakh and other slabs adjusted to provide relief to people reeling under the impact of high inflation.

Chidambaram is also expected to tweak schemes like the Rajiv Gandhi Equity Savings Scheme (RGESS) to encourage individuals to invest surplus funds in stock markets. The effort would be to do away with grey areas and make schemes more attractive to first time investors.

His main task however, would be to arrest declining growth, which is likely to fall to a 10-year low of 5 percent in 2012-13. The contracting industrial production will also require the Minister?s attention.

The Survey has indicated that growth in the next fiscal could be in the range of 6.1-6.7 percent.

The Finance Ministry may also announce steps to raise tax and non-tax revenue and cut expenditure to keep the fiscal deficit under check.

On the tax front, Chidambaram is likely to incorporate some of the provisions of the Direct Taxes Code (DTC) in the tax proposal, besides announcing a roadmap for implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST).

As regards disinvestment, the Minister is likely to raise the target to Rs 40,000 crore for 2013-14, from Rs 30,000 crore budgeted for this fiscal. However, the government may raise only Rs 27,000 crore in the current fiscal.

While attributing declining growth to global and domestic factors, the Survey underlines the need for policy actions to spur growth.

Advanced breast cancer edges up in younger women - TwinCities.com

CHICAGO?Advanced breast cancer has increased slightly among young women, a 34-year analysis suggests. The disease is still uncommon among women younger than 40, and the small change has experts scratching their heads about possible reasons.

The results are potentially worrisome because young women's tumors tend to be more aggressive than older women's, and they're much less likely to get routine screening for the disease.

Still, that doesn't explain why there'd be an increase in advanced cases and the researchers and other experts say more work is needed to find answers.

It's likely that the increase has more than one cause, said Dr. Rebecca Johnson, the study's lead author and medical director of a teen and young adult cancer program at Seattle Children's Hospital.

"The change might be due to some sort of modifiable risk factor, like a lifestyle change" or exposure to some sort of cancer-linked substance, she said.

Johnson said the results translate to about 250 advanced cases diagnosed in women younger than 40 in the mid-1970s versus more than 800 in 2009. During those years, the number of women nationwide in that age range went from about 22 million to closer to 30 million?an increase that explains part of the study trend "but definitely not all of it," Johnson said.

Other experts said women delaying pregnancy might be a factor, partly because getting pregnant at an older age might cause an already growing tumor to spread

more quickly in response to pregnancy hormones.

Obesity and having at least a drink or two daily have both been linked with breast cancer but research is inconclusive on other possible risk factors, including tobacco and chemicals in the environment. Whether any of these explains the slight increase in advanced disease in young women is unknown.

There was no increase in cancer at other stages in young women. There also was no increase in advanced disease among women older than 40.

Overall U.S. breast cancer rates have mostly fallen in more recent years, although there are signs they may have plateaued.

Some 17 years ago, Johnson was diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer at age 27, and that influenced her career choice to focus on the disease in younger women.

"Young women and their doctors need to understand that it can happen in young women," and get checked if symptoms appear, said Johnson, now 44. "People shouldn't just watch and wait."

The authors reviewed a U.S. government database of cancer cases from 1976 to 2009. They found that among women aged 25 to 39, breast cancer that has spread to distant parts of the body?advanced disease?increased from between 1 and 2 cases per 100,000 women to about 3 cases per 100,000 during that time span.

The study was published Tuesday in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

About one in 8 women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime, but only 1 in 173 will develop it by age 40. Risks increase with age and certain gene variations can raise the odds.

Routine screening with mammograms is recommended for older women but not those younger than 40.

Dr. Len Lichtenfeld, the American Cancer Society's deputy chief medical officer, said the results support anecdotal reports but that there's no reason to start screening all younger women since breast cancer is still so uncommon for them.

He said the study "is solid and interesting and certainly does raise questions as to why this is being observed." One of the most likely reasons is probably related to changes in childbearing practices, he said, adding that the trend "is clearly something to be followed."

Dr. Ann Partridge, chair of the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's advisory committee on breast cancer in young women, agreed but said it's also possible that doctors look harder for advanced disease in younger women than in older patients. More research is needed to make sure the phenomenon is real, said Partridge, director of the breast cancer center at the Harvard-affiliated Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

The study shouldn't cause alarm, she said. Still, Partridge said young women should be familiar with their breasts and see the doctor if they notice any lumps or other changes.

Software engineer Stephanie Carson discovered a large breast tumor that had already spread to her lungs; that diagnosis in 2003 was a huge shock.

"I was so clueless," she said. "I was just 29 and that was the last thing on my mind."

Carson, who lives near St. Louis, had a mastectomy, chemotherapy, radiation and other treatments and she frequently has to try new drugs to keep the cancer at bay.

Because most breast cancer is diagnosed in early stages, there's a misconception that women are treated, and then get on with their lives, Carson said. She and her husband had to abandon hopes of having children, and she's on medical leave from her job.

"It changed the complete course of my life," she said. "But it's still a good life."

US New-Home Sales Jump to Highest Since July ... - AOL Real Estate

Copyright 2013 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten or redistributed. New home sales rise; homebuilders ar work.U.S. new-home sales jumped in January from the previous month to the highest level since July 2008, a sign that the housing recovery is accelerating. The Commerce Department said Tuesday that new-home sales rose nearly 16 percent in January to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 437,000. The percentage increase was the largest in nearly 20 years. And December's sales were revised higher to 378,000 from 369,000.

Steady job creation and near-record-low mortgage rates are spurring more Americans to buy houses. At the same time, the number of previously occupied homes for sale is at a 13-year low. That shortage creates more demand for new homes. Builders began construction on the most homes in four years last year. Though new homes represent less than 20 percent of the housing sales market, they have an outsize impact on the economy. Each home built creates an average of three jobs for a year and generates about $90,000 in tax revenue, according to data from the National Association of Homebuilders.

The increase in home building has helped boost construction hiring. The industry has gained 98,000 jobs since September, the best stretch since the spring of 2006. Still, the increases in new-home sales are coming from depressed levels. Sales plummeted to a record low in 2011. And sales are still well below the 700,000 annual level that economists consider healthy.

Jury awards $3.35 million in vaginal mesh case against Johnson & Johnson

ATLANTIC CITY, New Jersey (Reuters) - A jury on Monday said Johnson & Johnson should pay a South Dakota woman $3.35 million for failing to adequately warn her doctor of the potential dangers of a vaginal mesh implant made by the company's Ethicon subsidiary, and for misrepresenting the product in brochures.

It was the first verdict among some 1,800 vaginal mesh cases pending in New Jersey against Ethicon and J&J, and could have an impact on thousands of lawsuits against other manufacturers of similar products.

The lawsuit, in state Superior Court in Atlantic City, New Jersey, was brought by Linda Gross, 47, of Watertown, South Dakota, in November 2008. It alleged that the Gyncare Prolift vaginal mesh was not safe and that J&J and Ethicon were liable, among other things, for "their defective design, manufacture, warnings and instructions."

The Ethicon product, before being taken off the U.S. market last year, was used to treat urinary incontinence and pelvic organ collapse, a condition for which the plaintiff, a nurse, was treated in November 2008. That condition happens when tissue that holds the pelvic organs in place is weak or stretched and bulges into the vagina. There are different types of this prolapse condition, which usually occurs after menopause, childbirth or a hysterectomy.

Gross, a nurse, filed her lawsuit after having surgery in 2006 to install a Gyncare Prolift for pelvic prolapse. She alleged the surgery led to a variety of problems, including mesh erosion, scar tissue, inflammation and "neurologic compromise to ... structures and tissue."

She said she had to seek medical treatment and 18 operations to repair the damage caused by the mesh.

Ben Anderson, the lawyer representing Gross, called the jury verdict "a strong statement to Johnson & Johnson and Ethicon that they cannot put profits before women's safety."

The verdict, by a panel of six women and three men, followed a six-week trial before Judge Carol Higbee. The judge was expected to decide later today whether to allow a hearing on punitive damages.

Sheri Woodruff, a spokeswoman for Ethicon, said, "While we are always concerned when a patient experiences medical conditions like those suffered by the plaintiff, all surgeries for pelvic organ prolapse present risks of complications."

She said she could not comment further.

In addition to the lawsuits against Ethicon and J&J in New Jersey, about 11,000 other claims have been filed against a variety of manufacturers of vaginal mesh, according to Florida attorney Bryan Aylstock.

Those claims have been consolidated into five cases that are pending in federal court in West Virginia, according to Aylstock, co-lead counsel in one of the West Virginia cases.

The defendants in those cases are Ethicon, C.R. Bard Inc, Boston Scientific Corp, Coloplast, and Endo Health Solutions' American Medical Systems Inc.

Last year, jurors in a state court in Bakersfield, California, said C.R. Bard was liable for $3.6 million in the first case over the vaginal mesh devices to go to trial. The panel found the plaintiff and her husband were entitled to a total of $5.5 million for her medical expenses, pain, suffering and other damages resulting from Bard's Avaulta Plus device.

Last June, J&J announced that it had stopped selling the vaginal mesh following lawsuits that allege they caused infections and bleeding.

According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, some 75,000 women received mesh repairs for pelvic organ prolapse in 2010, and about 200,000 more received the mesh implants for stress urinary incontinence.

Tim Nelson, a senior analyst for Nuveen Asset Management, said the size of the award to Gross was surprising. But he said the many lawsuits over the product pose little risk to J&J's finances or its shares.

"That's because big companies like J&J can drag out these cases forever" and thereby whittle down judgments through appeals or other means, he said. "So it's hard to generalize one award to multiple cases. My guess is that it won't be a huge issue for the company."

J&J shares were down 20 cents to $76.04 in midday trading on the New York Stock Exchange.

The Pope's New Shoes End the Papal High-End Fashion Truther Movement

Pope Benedict XVI's papal shoes are, like the man who wore them, headed for retirement. B16, who plans to resign on February 28, will trade in the red, shiny, and expensive-looking slippers for a pair of pedestrian brown loafers presented to him by a Mexican shoemaker when the Pope and his?entourage?visited the city of?Le?n, in central Mexico, in March 2012. (Le?n is known for its enormous leather industry.) While it's understandable that the Pope would abandon his iconic footwear in retirement ? the shoes are a papal tradition, and on Thursday he will no longer be the Pope ? it also comes as a shock to the system, since his decision to wear those same red shoes led to accusations, not all of them fair, that the Pope possessed an unusual taste for luxury.

RELATED: First Native American Saint Opens New Chapter of Catholic History

These accusations began with the early rumor that the Pope's shoes were manufactured by the Italian fashion house Prada, which supposedly evidenced his tendency toward expensive labels. Shortly after his coronation, for example, the Associated Press?wrote:

Whether it's Prada and Gucci, or just fancy ecclesiastical tailoring, Pope Benedict XVI is his own man when it comes to dressing [...] the vintage styles have turned Benedict into something of a fashion celebrity. "Those red shoes have made quite an impression," said Vatican historian Alberto Melloni.

Even though the shoes?weren't manufactured by Prada ? rather, they were made by a Roman cobbler named?Antonio Arellano ? the rumor lingered, so much so that Reuters spent several paragraphs debunking it following the announcement of the Pope's resignation. One reason why the rumor stayed around was immediate precedent: John Paul II, who served from 1978 until his death in 2005, never wore bright red shoes. (Indeed, wearing them is optional.) So for many ? like Catholic blogger Andrew Sullivan ? the shoes seemed ostentatious. Another reason: the Pope?has been photographed wearing expensive?Serengeti?sunglasses,?a decision?the Vatican brushed off:

A senior Vatican official averred that the Pope's choice of products was "completely arbitrary". He's aware of the buzz," he went on, "but mostly he laughs about it because it's so absurd. What does he really have to choose? He doesn't wear a tie or a coat. The glasses he wears are the same glasses he wore as a Cardinal, as is the pen he writes with."

Benedict will also take on the title of pope "emeritus" ? perhaps former fake shoe enthusiast might work, too.

Geeksphone Peak hands-on: a midrange Firefox OS phone from Spain (video)

Geeksphone Peek handson a midrange Firefox OS phone from Spain video

Never heard of Geeksphone before? We can't quite blame you, but it's getting a fair share of attention at Mobile World Congress. While the company has cranked out an Android handset or two over the past few years, it's now dipping a second hand into the Firefox OS pot. Of the two models unveiled at this week's show, the Peak is the higher-end: it boasts a 4.3-inch qHD display, 8MP rear camera and 2MP front-facing cam, a 1.2GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 Play chipset (MSM8225). 512MB RAM, 4GB storage with microSD expansion and a 1,800mAh battery.

As you can see, the specs on the Peak aren't anything to email home about, but for a Firefox OS device, it's certainly above-average. The materials are rather on the plasticky side and don't necessarily exude a large sense of elegance, but we're not going to say that the build quality isn't out of the norm for a device in this price range. We didn't have any problem holding it in our hand, and while we weren't given exact dimensions, it appeared to be roughly around 10mm thick. The back of the Peak sports the camera, LED flash and the branding of a Firefox OS developer device.

In terms of radio frequencies, the Peak is compatible with HSPA 900/1900/2100 and quadband GSM / EDGE. It's expected to arrive in Geeksphone's retail store in the coming weeks and the estimated price will be around 200 euros. Check out our full gallery and video of the device and OS below.

Queer Talk: Obama Administration Brief Urges Supreme Court to ...

LovingVirginiaSCOTUSViaOccupyTheBodyPolitic

LGBTs and allies have strongly urged President Obama to act, and on Friday, his administration did, urging the U.S. Supreme Court to strike down the Defense of Marriage Act, which was passed in 1996. At MetroWeekly, Justin Snow writes:

Arguing that Section 3 of DOMA, which forbids federal recognition of same-sex marriage, violates the Constitution, Solicitor General Donald Verrilli writes that DOMA also deserves heightened scrutiny because of the history of discrimination faced by gays and lesbians. ?

The brief also takes issue with arguments advanced by the Republican-controlled House Bipartisan Legal Advisory Group (BLAG), which has been defending DOMA in federal court since the Obama administration stopped doing so in February 2011, including its argument that this is an issue that should not be decided by the courts.

?BLAG makes an appeal to this Court to allow the democratic process to run its course. That approach would be very well taken in most circumstances. This is, however, the rare case in which deference to the democratic process must give way to the fundamental constitutional command of equal treatment under law.

SCOTUS will hear arguments in the case of United States v. Windsor. Edith Windsor is challenging DOMA (beginning in 2010), following the death of her wife, Thea Spyer.

Windsor is suing to recoup about $363,000, the federal estate tax she was forced to pay on her ?inheritance? from Spyer. The federal government does not tax wealth that passes to a surviving heterosexual spouse.

MetroWeekly also reports that on Friday the DoJ filed a brief

? related to the administration?s right to pursue an appeal. BLAG also filed a brief challenging the government?s right to appeal and lawyers for Windsor filed a brief urging the Supreme Court to rule in the case. Oral arguments are scheduled to begin before the high court on March 27 with a ruling expected in June.

Read the full DOMA brief here.

At Think Progress, Igor Volsky focuses on (emphasis in original)

The 6 Best Arguments For Gay And Lesbian Equality In Obama?s DOMA Brief ?

2. Gay and lesbian people have been subject to a significant history of discrimination in this country. ?

3. Sexual orientation is ? a ?distinguishing characteristic,? and that is true even though so many gay and lesbian people have been forced for so long to hide their identities in order to avoid discrimination. ?

4. The ?broad consensus in the scientific community is that, for the vast majority of people (gay and straight alike), sexual orientation is not a voluntary choice.? ?

5. ?No sound basis exists for concluding that same-sex couples who have committed to marriage are anything other than fully capable of responsible parenting and child-rearing.? ?

6. If anything, ?the denial of federal benefits otherwise accorded to married individuals undermines the efforts of same-sex couples to raise their children, hindering rather than advancing any interest in promoting child welfare.??

Volsky writes that the DOMA brief cites California?s Prop 8,

as an example of the ongoing problem of bias against homosexuals. ?Obama is reportedly considering asking the Court to overturn California?s ban against same-sex marriage before it hears oral arguments in that case on Tuesday, March 26. The Windsor case will be heard on Wednesday, March 27.

DOMA became law in 1996. In 2004, George W. Bush announced his support for a federal marriage amendment. Jim Burroway has a bit of history, at BoxTurtleBulletin:

With Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court ruling that nothing short of marriage would provide full equality for same-sex couples as required in the state?s constitution ? , and with San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom?s order that the county clerk begin issuing marriage licenses to gay couples ?, pressure had been building on ? Bush, then running for a second term as President, to do something! And so, in lockstep with his conservative Christian base ? and in keeping with his campaign strategist Karl Rove?s encouraging several important states (including, critically, Ohio) to place marriage bans on their ballots as part of a get-out-the-vote effort ? Bush declared his support for a the Federal Marriage Amendment, which, if enacted, would have permanently and nationally banished all same-sex marriages ?or the legal incidents thereof.?

The day before the DoJ filed the DOMA brief, the American Foundation for Equal Rights filed briefs asking SCOUTS to overturn Proposition 8. Via Freedom to Marry:

? (T)he attorneys for ? AFER ? filed a brief in their Hollingsworth v. Perry case asking the United States Supreme Court to overturn Proposition 8 and restore the freedom to marry in California. ?

The brief that AFER?s attorneys ? Ted Olson and David Boies ? ? seeks to move marriage forward in California and nationwide. ? Here?s a key excerpt:

?The only substantive question in this case is whether the State is entitled to exclude gay men and lesbians from the institution of marriage and deprive their relationships ? their love ? of the respect, and dignity and social acceptance, that heterosexual marriages enjoy. Proponents have ? never identified a single harm that they, or anyone else, would suffer as a result of allowing gay men and lesbians to marry.

A great deal has happened 1996, including a growing support from some on the Right, accompanied, of course, by the adamant voices of opponents of LGBT equality. One indication of both, from Joe My God:

Illinois GOP chairman Pat Brady may lose his job over his support of marriage equality.

Electeds who follow the leadership of LGBT activists and advocates at local, state and national levels, and those who don?t, are obvious.

2nd blizzard bearing down on Plains region

A winter storm moves across the center of the nation, bringing more snow to the Plains, Midwest, and Mid-Mississippi River Valley. The southern side of this system allows for showers and thunderstorms to persist for the Southeast.

A winter storm moves across the center of the nation, bringing more snow to the Plains, Midwest, and Mid-Mississippi River Valley. The southern side of this system allows for showers and thunderstorms to persist for the Southeast.

(AP) ? A second major winter storm was bearing down on the central Plains, forcing cancellations and sending public works crews scrambling for salt and sand supplies less than a week after another system dumped more than a foot of snow on parts of the region.

National Weather Service officials in Kansas issued blizzard warnings and watches through late Monday ahead of the strong storm system that's packing snow and high winds. The storm has been tracking across western Texas toward Oklahoma, Kansas and Missouri.

"We're expecting more wind with this storm," said Jeff Johnson, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Dodge City, Kan. "Snow amounts are varying, but we could see upward of a foot across south-central Kansas with lesser amounts across west-central and central Kansas."

Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback amended the state of emergency declaration he signed last week to include the new storm.

"This storm has the potential to be more dangerous than last week's storm," said Brownback, who held a briefing Sunday night along with emergency officials in his state to warn residents about the weather.

He urged motorists to "stay off the road unless it's absolutely critical" but said drivers who must travel should pack their charged cellphones and emergency kits containing food, water, blankets, road flares and shovels.

The region was hit by a massive storm last week that dumped a foot of snow in some sections, closed airports and caused numerous accidents.

"It would have been nice if we'd had a few days to recover, to do some equipment rehab," Joe Pajor, deputy director of public works in Wichita, Kan., told The Wichita Eagle. The city saw its second-highest snowfall ever Thursday with 14.2 inches.

Other totals from the Thursday snowstorm included 18 inches in the southern Kansas town of Zenda, 17 inches in Hays, Kan., about 13 inches in northeast Missouri and 12 inches of snow in parts of Kansas City.

Steve Corfidi, meteorologist with the National Weather Service's Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Okla., said the storm also will affect southern states and could spawn tornadoes Tuesday in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, the Florida Panhandle and Georgia.

"It definitely will be one of the more significant events of the season, the winter season, absolutely," Corfidi told The Associated Press. "Both in winter weather and severe weather potential, and rain, down in the southeast United States."

More than a foot of snow is possible from the Texas Panhandle, across the Oklahoma Panhandle and into Kansas and possibly Missouri as the storm moves eastward from the southwestern United States.

While snowfall is expected to taper off by Monday afternoon, wind gusts of up to 35 mph will remain a hazard, said Sarah Johnson, a meteorologist in the National Weather Service's Amarillo, Texas, office.

Pajor told the Wichita newspaper the new storm "looks worse than the last one" and that sand and salt supplies are low because of last week's record storm, as are the number of locations where snow can be transported off city streets. He said the plowing strategy for the new blizzard may have to involve plowing snow into the center of arterial streets, and cutting traffic to one lane each direction.

He also said streets won't be treated with the city's limited sand and salt supplies until the snow ends and plowing is under way.

The threat of the pending storm forced cancellations Sunday and Monday in Kansas and Missouri, including the championship basketball tournament for the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Association, which rescheduled the tournament for Tuesday in Park City, Kan.

Matt Lehenbauer, emergency management director for Woodward County, Okla., said he expected rain or snow to begin there Sunday evening and forecast up to a foot of snow and wind gusts up to 50 miles per hour.

"We're expecting white-out conditions," he told the AP.

He said there is plenty of salt and sand on hand to help clear roads, but the conditions may cause delays.

"We may not get the roads cleared until midday Tuesday if we get the expected amount of snow and wind. As it's falling, in the blizzard-like conditions, we just won't be able to keep up," he said.

Pippa Middleton to write cookery column for UK supermarket

LONDON (Reuters) - Pippa Middleton, the sister of the Duchess of Cambridge, is to give cooking tips to the masses in a new column for British supermarket chain Waitrose.

Middleton, 29, will write a column for the upmarket chain's monthly magazine, Waitrose Kitchen, called "Pippa's Friday Night Feasts".

Her foray into kitchen advice comes after she released a book called "Celebrate" last year, which was a guide to entertaining through the year and built on the experience she gained working for her family's party-planning business.

The book by the sister of Britain's future queen was both praised and pilloried in equal measure but did not sell well and was quickly discounted in book stores.

William Sitwell, editor of Waitrose Kitchen, said readers would enjoy Middleton's relaxed and easy entertaining ideas.

"Pippa will be an excellent contributor to the magazine, bringing with her a wealth of experience of entertaining, gained in part from working at her family's party business," he said in a statement.

Her first column will appear in the magazine's April issue and will feature casual dining ideas and recipes.

Middleton said her column would be an "exciting opportunity to share my own passion and enthusiasm for food and entertaining and I can't wait to get started".

Health Insurance Tips That Are Practical And Easy ? Social ... - Valkry

Many people avoid obtaining health insurance until they need it, which is often much too late. The reasons for this vary. For some people, the thought of purchasing health insurance never enters their minds. Others don't fully comprehend how it works or how important it is, and then there are those who simply don't have the money to buy a policy. This article is packed with tips and tricks that will help you to understand various aspects of health insurance coverage.

To save the most money possible on health insurance premiums, consider catastrophic coverage instead of a more comprehensive one. While comprehensive covers doctor visits and prescriptions, catastrophic coverage covers hospital visits and emergency care.

Research your particular situation thoroughly if you're attempting to purchase health insurance with a pre-existing health problem. You might not even be eligible for health insurance from some companies if you have one of these conditions; others charge people with chronic or serious conditions far more each month than people who don't have these conditions. By researching all of your options, you'll be able to choose the best coverage for the lowest premium.

Expect health insurance policies to have hidden loopholes within the fine print. Read every page of the policy, so you won't be surprised when the company tells you that something isn't covered. There will be things you have to pay for yourself, and knowing what these are ahead of time will save you the headaches.

Tips To Help You Select The Most Suitable Health Insurance Plan Don't pay your health insurance bill with your credit card. Many insurance providers will tack on as much as a 15 percent fee if you use your credit card, and they might also charge an administration fee.

If you have a family history of needing vision correction, or if you have already been prescribed glasses or contacts, it's important to include vision coverage in your health insurance plan. Vision insurance can cover a majority of your checkup costs as well as the costs of any frames, lenses or contacts you may need. Of course, nobody is forced to have vision insurance, and you can save a few bucks a month by not having it.

The Easy Way To Find The Right Health Insurance Ask your health provider if they are giving the necessary mandated records to the Medical Information Bureau. If they are, you can obtain a copy of these records for free one time per year.

Comparison shopping is a smart idea when it comes to buying health insurance. There are numerous insurance companies and plans available, unless you are bound by the limited group insurance choices offered by your employer. Compare rates and policies from different insurers, as well as different coverage within each company.

If you receive a telephone call from a health insurance provider during the application process, do not volunteer information. Be sure that you are only answering the questions that they ask. If you volunteer extra information they will make a record of it, and may use it to raise your premiums, or even deny you insurance coverage at all.

There is no question about the importance of having good health. In order to stay healthy, you need reliable health insurance. Apply the tips you have just read to select the best policy available for your budget. Reaching All Of Your Web Design Goals On Time

evasi0n now updated with full jailbreak support for iOS 6.1.2

Earlier today, Apple released iOS 6.1.2 where shortly after, planetbeing confirmed evasi0n works on iOS 6.1.2 but we would need to wait for it to be updated. The evad3rs have officially updated evasi0n for Mac, Windows, and Linux to officially support the iOS 6.1.2 firmware.

If you are already jailbroken on iOS 6.1 or below, you'll need to update via iTunes and restore to iOS 6.1.2 and repeat the jailbreak process. Keep in mind that users have had issues with over-the-air (OTA) updates followed by a jailbreak, so make sure you update via iTunes before attempting to jailbreak iOS 6.1.2 using evasi0n.

If you need help with the jailbreak process itself, you can follow our guide linked below. Hit the source link to download the newest version of evasi0n.

McCready's death puts 'Celeb Rehab' in spotlight

Kevin Winter / Getty Images

By Ree Hines, TODAY contributor

The apparent suicide of embattled country music singer Mindy McCready has put Dr. Drew Pinsky's VH1 series "Celebrity Rehab" in the spotlight again. McCready appeared on the show's third season, and she's the fifth former "Rehab" cast member who's died since seeking treatment on the reality TV series.

Mike Starr of Alice in Chains, and "The Real World's" Joey Kovar, also from the show's third season, died of drug overdoses after their "Rehab" stints. And drugs were believed to play a role in the deaths of season two stars Jeff Conaway and Rodney King.

But is there any link between the deaths and the very public treatment each of the stars received for their addictions? Or did the nature of their addictions simply put McCready and others at high risk of early mortality?

On Sunday, singer Richard Marx gave his opinion. After tweeting his sympathies about McCready, he compared Pinsky to physician-assisted- suicide advocate Dr. Jack Kevorkian.

"I think ?Dr? Drew Pinsky should change his name to Kevorkian. Same results," Marx wrote in a now-deleted tweet.

Marx apologized for the swipe on Monday, but maintained his criticism.

"I went too far with the Kevorkian crack," he wrote. "It is, however, my opinion that what Dr. D does is exploitation and his TV track record is not good."

Pinsky called into "The View" Tuesday morning and was asked about that track record and whether or not he felt reality TV treatment played a role in the deaths of the former "Rehab" stars.

"In a weird way, I wish I could claim more responsibility for this," he said. "The reality is, though, I haven't seen Mindy, say, in years. I've talked to her occasionally, we've been friendly, but I've not been her doctor in years."

As for the others?

"I wish some of them would stay with us," Pinsky said. "Some of them do, and some are sober. But some go on their own way and cut their own path. I wish I could be more responsible for them. I received (on Monday) about 10 emails and texts from those that are doing well who were so grateful."

Among those who reached out to the doctor was season three's Heidi Fleiss.

"'Celeb Rehab' and you are the best things I've done for myself," the woman once dubbed "The Hollywood Madam" told him via text.

Pinksy said the message left him feeling that he was "doing something right" with the show.

"I think there's an important lesson here, that these diseases -- advanced addictions -- have the same prognosis as cancer," he explained. "If you don't participate in treatment in an ongoing fashion, the prognosis is really bad." ?

Pinsky took a break from "Celebrity Rehab" after the show's fifth season. He now leads in VH1's "Rehab With Dr. Drew," which focuses on the addictions and treatment of non-stars.

Yahoo! revamps website with eye on Facebook, Twitter

(Reuters) - Yahoo Inc is rolling out a revamped look for its website aimed at making the Web portal more modern and attractive to users.

"We wanted it to be familiar but also wanted it to embrace some of the modern paradigms of the Web," Chief Executive Marissa Mayer said on NBC's "Today" show on Wednesday.

"One thing that I really like is this very personalized newsfeed, it's infinite and you can go on scrolling forever," she said.

In a blog post, Mayer said the company will begin introducing the changes over the next few days, with more changes and improvements expected in the coming months. The endless newsfeed containing stories, pictures or video is similar to feeds on Facebook Inc as well as Twitter.

Mayer also said in her blog that the website would feature newly designed applications, allow users to log in with their Yahoo or Facebook IDs and would work well on smartphones and tablets.

Yahoo is one of the world's most-visited online properties, but revenue has declined in recent years amid competition from Google and Facebook.

Yahoo has also been beset by internal turmoil that has resulted in a revolving door of CEOs.

Mayer, 37, took over after a tumultuous period at Yahoo in which former CEO Scott Thompson resigned after less than six months on the job over a controversy about his academic credentials, and during which Yahoo co-founder Jerry Yang resigned from the board and cut his ties with the company.

Yahoo's 2012 revenue was $5 billion. It has been flat year over year, off from some $6.3 billion in 2010.

Shift Work and Relationships | Psych Central

Shift Work and RelationshipsResearch shows shift work has a negative effect on health, relationships, marriages and children, and increases rates of separation and divorce. When partners work different shifts there is often little face-to-face interaction. It becomes difficult to plan any family activities, maintain healthy communication, and sometimes even a regular sex life.

In today?s economy, more and more unemployed people are finding it increasingly difficult to find work. As a result, many people are taking whatever jobs they can find ? even undesirable jobs such as shift work.

Shift work jobs can leave both partners with very different feelings. For example, the partner working the job may experience feelings of guilt regarding being away from the home. They may feel frustrated and ?left out? due to being unable to participate in particular events or family time. This worker also may experience increased stress, feelings of overwhelm, and even irritability due to inconsistent sleep patterns combined with other emotions.

On the other hand, the other partner with more regular hours may experience feelings of loneliness. If there are children or others to be cared for in the home, this partner may feel a greater sense of responsibility and accountability. These feelings may lead to resentment and frustration.

Shift work may not be the ideal way of working or living, but it may be necessary to make ends meet or to keep employment. However, even with all of the negative things stated, there is hope.
If you and your partner work different shifts, there are ways to ensure you still maintain a happy and healthy relationship. Consider the following tips:

  1. Call or text during breaks.

This simple gesture will keep communication open throughout the day. If possible, try to keep the conversations light. Avoid talking about things that require more time than you have or that could create negative feelings.

  2. Remember, quality is better than quantity.

You and your partner may not have tons of time to spend together, but you can make the most of the time you have. Set a date or plan a fun activity during your next available time together and make the most out of whatever you do.

  3. Leave little reminders of your love.

Little reminders can come in the form of a note or a simple gift. Leave your partner items in surprising places such as the car, the bathroom, or even the fridge. This will let your partner know that you are thinking of them and leave them thinking of you as well. If you?re not really into notes or don?t have time or money for small gifts, consider completing a chore for your partner. This will show that you are considerate of his or her feelings and willing to pitch in to help in any way you can.

  4. Set aside time for ?business talk.?

When partners have different, hectic schedules there is little time for anything. You don?t want the majority of your time spent talking about serious matters such as finances, household issues, etc. Set aside a specific time to address these issues so the remaining time can be enjoyed to the fullest.

  5. Check in emotionally.

In the chaos of hectic days we can remember to say ?hi? or ask ?how are you?? in passing. We may also get to squeeze in an ?I love you? and ?can you pick up some milk?? We want to make sure that we are checking in with our partners on a deeper level. Take the time to know how your partner is really feeling. As mentioned earlier, each spouse can experience various emotions as a result of their roles. Talk about these feelings and discuss what can be done to help both partners fell more comfortable.

Shift work doesn?t have to be miserable for partners, nor does it have to be a death sentence to your relationship. Relationships take hard work. For partners who have very different schedules, hectic lifestyles, or minimal time to spend together, these relationships may require a little extra work. You may choose to use some or all of the tips in this article or you may choose to use none. Evaluate your relationship, look at your partner?s needs, and do whatever is necessary to keep your relationship healthy. Don?t let shift work get the best of you.
