Valentine's Day is a celebration of love in all its forms, including the love between a woman and her gay ex-husband. Judith Newton, a Huffington Post blogger and professor, told her story of the romance she shared with her former husband, a gay man who died of AIDS in 1986.
Newton met her husband in the 1960s, and the hopefulness and optimism of the time created a strong bond between her and her ex, she said in a HuffPost Live segment. "We were both deeply influenced by '60s politics, so when he finally, I guess you could say came out, I felt--I admired him for his courage, because I had become a feminist and I felt that his coming out was a similar kind of political act," she told host Nancy Redd. "I was also grateful that I was still the only woman in his life."
Though Newton's husband died almost two decades ago, she still had a message for him on Valentine's Day. "I still love you, and I still live with the happiness that we had."
Newton and Redd were joined in the conversation by Kimberly Brooks, a psychotherapist who also has a gay ex-husband and Jay Seagull, a psychologist who is gay and has a straight ex-wife.
