Volunteers from McDonough help with West Rome storm cleanup

Youth group cleans up storm damage

Andy Davenport, 13, concentrated on rolling fresh gray paint on the side of a damaged building on Williamson Street as her fellow youth group members worked alongside her on Friday.

?It?s really sad what happened with the tornado, but I?m glad we could come help out,? said Andy.

About 70 members of a youth group from Sharon Baptist Church in McDonough descended upon Williamson Street in West Rome to aid the neighborhood in cleanup efforts after the storm damaged the area.

Mary Hardin Thornton, director of Keep Rome-Floyd Beautiful, coordinated with the youth group through Winshape Wilderness and was on hand to help organize tools and labor divisions for the clean up effort.

?We?re doing a lot of bringing limbs and things that got blown around by the storm to the street so that the grabbers can pick those up,? Thornton said.

Zach Harter of WinShape Wilderness said it was a unique opportunity for the youth group that wanted to become involved in serving the community. The group is in town for five days, working with the WinShape organization on group exercises and service programs.

?The experience of serving someone else is always going to change you,? Harter said. ?With a lot of the kids being at high school age, I think this is something that will stick with them for the rest of their lives.?

Homeowner Nancy Rogers watched the youth group members near a downed tree in her yard on Williamson Street.

She said neighbors suffered extensive damage to roofs and several trees were uprooted by the storm.

?They?ve done an amazing amount of work in a short period of time,? said Rogers. ?We really appreciate that.?

Up and down the street members of the group carried logs, trimmed branches and picked up debris that littered numerous yards.

Miranda Gaines worked with a friend as she picked up twigs and other scattered material. She said she felt good about the work because it would lift up the people in the neighborhood.

?The clean up is helping to show that people care about them,? Miranda said. ?It doesn?t matter how much you do, as long as you do something.?
